The Five Solas

 A.C.Pike

Introduction

The Five Solas are one of the most important cornerstones of the Protestant Reformation. They are a summary of the collective distinctives of the Reformed Faith.

The Five Solas

The term "sola" is a Latin word that means "alone" - collectively, they are referred to as the "solas."

Here are the Five Solas.

1) Sola Scriptura - Scripture Alone.

That the Scriptures alone are our absolute authority in all matters of life.

2) Sola Fide - Faith Alone.

That we are saved by grace through faith and not by our works.

3) Sola Gratia - Grace Alone.

That we are saved by grace alone and nothing else (not by works).

4) Solus Christus - Christ Alone.

That the whole of our salvation is due to Christ alone.

5) Soli Deo Gloria - Glory to God Alone.

That all the glory is given to God alone.

The above is a brief summary of what these five terms mean.

Conclusion

All the Protestant and Reformed churches hold to these five cornerstones of the Christian faith. They are the backbone of the Christian church.
