Psalm One

 A.C.Pike

Introduction

This Psalm was composed by king David of Israel. It was written with-in the time period of 1030 - 930BC. The Psalm itself has no title.

It is about a righteous man who does not walk in the "council of the ungodly" (v1) and how he delights in God's law.

The Scriptural Text

1) Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners, nor sitteth in the seat of the scornful. 2) But his delight is in the law of the Lord (Jehovah); and in his law doth he meditate day and night. 3) And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper. 4) The ungodly are not so: but are like the chaff which the wind driveth away. 5) Therefore the ungodly shall not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous.

The Textual Meaning

Verse One: We truly are blessed when we do not stand in the council of the ungodly or the ways of sinners or sit with scornful people. We do not participate in their bad behaviour or condone their ways.

Verse Two: All people should delight in Jehovah's Law and meditate upon it daily. If we apply God's Law in our lives, then we will see the benefits in our own lives and how we treat others.

Verse Three: A blessed person will be like a well-watered healthy tree that will bear fruit in due Season. He will not weather, but prosper.

Verse Four: Ungodly people will be like chaff that is blown away by the wind.

Verse Five: Ungodly people will not be able to stand when being judged. Sinful people can not stand in a Congregation of righteous people.

Additional

What a blessing it is to be covered by the precious blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. We, as believers, will be able to stand before the LORD (Jehovah) God because of what Jesus has done for us upon the cross.

Conclusion

What pearls of wisdom and encouragement the reader gleams from the inspired words of the Psalmist David.
